Replace halogen bulbs on 12V with LED (with dimming)
If you want to replace your halogen bulbs on 12V by LED, it's important to take into account the type of transformer you are using. The replacing process differs depending on the type of transformer you have installed; conventional or electronic transformer. In addition, you also have to take into account the already installed dimmers.
If your bulbs operate on 12V and you have conventional transformers installed, you have to make sure your existing dimmers are compatible with your ned LED bulbs. If they are compatible, you can make one on one replacements.
If the dimmers are not compatible with the LED bulbs, you have to install new LED compatible dimmers first. Only then you can start replacing your current bulbs by LED.
If you are using 12V bulbs and have electronic transformers installed, it is recommended to replace these transformers with conventional transformers on 12V. Replacing the transformers with LED power supplies is less interesting because most LED power supplies are not dimmable.
While installing keep in mind that conventional transformers are usually bigger and heavier. A transformer that we can recommend in this situation because of its compact size and high reliability is the KRS TR 50AUT.
After replacing the electronic transformers, you can replace your bulbs by LED. Below you can find an overview of the LED bulbs that can be used in this case. For more information about the other situations, you can consult our help page about replacing halogen by LED.
